Hermosa Valley Greenbelt/Trail | Trail | 19.5 acres |
HISTORY The greenbelt is a continuous strip of trees and a wood chip covered walkway located between Valley Blvd and Ardmore Ave in Hermosa Beach. Benches are located along the route. (Note the greenbelt runs north from Hermosa Beach into Manhattan Beach to Sepulveda Blvd for 2.1 Miles from the North boundary of Hermosa Beach. Only the Hermosa Beach portion is detailed in this write-up.) In 1888, the Santa Fe Railroad laid tracks from Los Angeles to the Redondo Beach wharf on the deepwater canyon. This was a port for shipping and a hotel was built for recreation. The passenger service was stopped in 1918, but freight was carried to a lumber yard until mid 20th century. The greenbelt was purchased by the City of Hermosa Beach from the Santa Fe Railroad in the 1980s, the tracks removed and the wood chips put over the rail bed.
START OF WALK At the north boundary of Hermosa (mile 0.0) a lightly traveled street cuts across the greenbelt. Walking south, Gould Ave (mile 0.11) crosses the greenbelt and is a very busy street. Cross on the west side of the intersection. There is water here for drinking and a dish for dogs. The longest unbroken stretch is now in front of you. Another very busy street, Pier Ave, crosses the greenbelt (mile 0.87). This is the main east west street of Hermosa Beach. Again, cross Pier Ave on the west side of the intersection. The next two crossings, at 8th street (mile 1.18) and 2nd street (mile 1.5) are lightly traveled streets and can be crossed in the middle of the intersections. Proceeding on, the greenbelt terminates at Herondo Ave (mile 1.64).
